Simple Joy: Happiness Reflecting Life With Friends and Family

Simply Treasure: Family

Life passes by so quickly as the sunrises before our eyes and the next thing we know it’s time for the sun to set.  Taking the time to reflect on what matters the most to us can be lost within our busy lives.  Slowing down for a moment and remembering those that we love can bring us simple joy.

New Beginnings: Great Day Monday

Monday is a great day for new beginnings~ Any special plans for the week? My ultimate goal is to get ready to have a garage sale in the next two weeks. (Always easier said than done.) This house has accumulated too much clutter! It was hard waking up this morning after being on vacation last week but we made it to the bus stop for school. Counting down the days until school is out. I love being a free bird with no schedule. Have a great Monday! ♥ B.B.

Florida Sunshine Vacation: Emerald Coastal Waters

Florida 2013

Good morning everyone~ Enjoyed a trip with my family to the Florida coast for a week.  The beautiful white sandy beaches and emerald coast no longer appeared in front of my eyes as I looked out the window this morning in Houston, Texas.  While traveling through Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Florida I met many new wonderful people.  It was fun sharing conversations regarding Barbara Bloom Books on the beach and during our road trip with other’s who have read my books to their children and grandchildren.  Looking forward to visiting again.

The Liebster Award: Barbara Bloom Books

The Liebster Award

I’ve been nominated by author Karina Gioertz.   She has written several books, including Country Girls, Lucky In Love and Welcome To The Half Orphan Club.  Find out more about Karina on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Karina-Gioertz/e/B005IS0900/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1363800503&sr=8-2-ent or visit Karina at her blog www.friedgatortail.wordpress.com .

The purpose of the Liebster Blog Award is to recognize blogs with fewer than 200 followers that deserve a look. My job is to:
(a) List 11 random facts about me;
(b) Answer 11 questions Karina has sent me;
(c) Set 11 questions to ask other authors;
(d) Tag other authors who should bask in the Liebster glow.

To my nominated writer friends – it means doing the same as I am doing here, i.e. post a blog linking back to mine, share 11 random facts about you, then nominate 11 bloggers to do the same. If you want to do this, but the thought of finding 11 other bloggers to tag puts you off, just write 11 random facts about yourself and remember to link back to my blog.

11 Random Facts About Me
1. I love rising early before the sun shines and grasping peaceful moments by myself with my laptop and a cup of hot coffee.
2. I am addicted to making others smile and it fills my heart with happiness.
3. I love the ocean.   It brings a calmness to my soul.
4. I love taking pictures with my camera of people, places and things.
5. I like to spend time in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes.
6. My favorite colors are red and orange.
7. I have two pets, a dog and a bird.
8. I love meeting new people.
9. I like to barbecue on the grill and have cook outs with friends.
10. I like going to amusement parks and riding all the roller coaster rides.
11. My heart flutters for the love of family.  They are the center of my universe.

Here are the 11 questions Karina asked me:

1. What is your biggest dream as an author?
I would like to travel the world with my books and share the love of reading to children and parents in different countries.
2. How do you feel when you’ve come to the final page of a first draft?
Extremely happy because I know I am a step closer to sharing the story I am writing with others to enjoy.
3. How do you go about naming your characters?
My character names jump out to me in my dreams and thoughts.  It is like naming your child after birth instead of before birth.  When I have an idea the name begins to take shape with the characters personality in the story.
4. Have you ever changed the name of a character?
Yes once I changed the name of a character in a book called ”Here Comes Pixie Pie.”  Her original name was Pinky Pie due to her love of the color pink.
5. Do you write to the end and then edit, or edit as you go?
I do a little of both, but the bulk of editing happens after I’m done writing out the entire story.
6. Has a reader ever said something about your book or blog that made your day? If so, what was it?
Anytime I hear the comparison to Dr. Seuss it warms my heart.  It makes me so happy when a reader let’s me know that their child loved the book so much that they read it multiple times and soon they will have the words memorized.
7. What is your favorite time of day to write?
When everyone is home and the house is really busy.  My thoughts are flowing with the movement of all the action in the home.
8. What motivated/inspired you to become a writer?
I’ve always been artistic.  It was my husband, family and friends who kept pushing me to pursue writing more seriously and to publish my work.
9. Would you continue writing if nobody ever read anything you wrote?

Yes I have written for many years with no intentions of anyone but family reading my work.  Writing for an audience is new to me because I first published in 2012.
10. What’s the happiest writer’s moment you’ve ever had?
Each and every time I have the opportunity to share a book with a child my heart melts.  It makes me so happy to share the books I have written at libraries, schools, and local parks.  The happiest part for me is watching a child smile and giggle as they read one of the books I have written.  I write with both the child and the parent in my mind.  I want both the parent and child to have a memorable moment while spending time together.

I’m tagging the following writers to continue the next chain of the Liebster Blog Award.

Author Dee Louis-Scott: Believe In The Magic

BELIEVE IN THE MAGIC

BELIEVE IN THE MAGIC

Dee Louis-Scott

Dee Louis-Scott is retiring from 30 years as a Federal employee. She has an adult daughter Autumn and is experiencing life as an empty nester. It has been 20 years since her mother’s death. The life lessons learned from her mom have been both powerful and inspirational. They have guided her throughout her life. Dee now lives in Raymore, Missouri.

Believe In The Magic

My Mom, Mattie Pearl Fisher, always told me to believe in the magic. The magic meant miracles. These miracles of life can be big, small and everything in between.

This book is a journey through the events in her life. There are also the life lessons gained from those events.

My Mom was born at a time in history when being Black and female was a double curse. You had to look very hard to find any human or legal rights.  Mom stood her ground.  She was confident and fierce, always pushing forward, striving to do things she wanted to do. Mom turned a deaf ear to those who thought they could dictate her life.

My Mom’s story is very powerful and inspirational; her spirit tenacious and infectious.  Mom encouraged all women she met to never settle for less than they deserved.

Let the tenacity of one woman inspire you to the greatness you were created for.

Excerpts From Believe in the Magic

Mattie was born a Caulbearer.  The Caul or Face Veil is a thin, filmy membrane, the remnants of the amniotic sac that covers or partially covers a newborn’s face immediately after birth. Some believe “caul children” have the ability to see behind the veil of life and death. It’s thought they can communicate with the dead and intuitively “know.” This was true for my Mother.  From Supernatural and Unexplained chapter.

Mattie’s mother and stepfather were cotton sharecroppers. They raised cotton on the plantation of white landowners back in the 1920’s. The sharecropping system was a financially oppressive one. The landowner assumed chief supervision of the farming operations and also retained legal rights to all the crops. Sharecroppers brought only their labor to the bargaining table to create income. The family often asked the landowner for credit keeping them bound financially. Mattie’s family seemed to be in a perpetual cycle of debt.

Even as a child Mattie knew this system was not right.  She would rebel against picking the cotton. One day when she was only 12 years old, her anger at her stepfather and the unfair system finally all came to a head.

From Ahead of her Time chapter

This was hardest thing I ever had to do. Holding her hand, I took a deep breath and asked, “Mom are you fighting because you’re a fighter? Or, are you fighting for Crystal and me? I know you’re tired.” I paused, took another deep breath, and dug deep down in my soul. “Mom if you’re tired and you want to go, it’s okay. I’m strong like you. Crystal and I will miss you forever but we will be okay. Do what’s best for you.”

“Mom, it hurts so much to see you like this. I don’t know what else to do.” Then a Bible verse came to mind. It was the first Bible verse she taught me when I was a little girl. Holding her hand again, I closed my eye and began to recite the 23rd Psalm aloud.

Spotlight Author Interview: Barbara Bloom

Thursday, 14 February 2013

Author:  Barbara Bloom

Spotlight Welcome everyone, as we talk to Barbara Bloom, children’s author. Thanks for being here Barbara!

Barbara Bloom I would like to thank you for the opportunity to share my books via a live interview on Facebook.

Spotlight Our pleasure. So tell us about your first book, and how you came to put it down on paper.

My first book was published in May 2012.
It is called, “Your Shoes My Shoes.”

Your Shoes My Shoes: We All Love Shoes!www.amazon.com
Girls and Boys will be excited as they read this fun rhyming story book all about shoes.  We all love shoes.

Barbara Bloom My initial thoughts for the book came from raising children. We find one shoe and then we find two and sometimes we have to look in the not so obvious places.

Spotlight We’re always hunting for them at our house, that’s for sure. Did the text come to you all at once, or did you polish it for a while?

Barbara Bloom The idea came to me all at once. I have always had a great interest in writing and poetry. When I speak often I tend to talk in rhyme naturally. I read ”Your Shoes My Shoes” to a few people and they told me I should be writing books.

Barbara Bloom I thought, “Wow that would be a dream on my bucket list.”

Barbara Bloom I took the initiative to find out how to publish on amazon. I have always been a believer that we are in control of our own destiny. I write for the love of smiling children.  It is important to me that the parent and/or caregiver also enjoys the story line of each book I write.

Spotlight It’s certainly easier to achieve our author (vs. writer) dreams these days. What did you learn during that process?

Barbara Bloom If you let a child choose which pair of shoes they want to wear, you will find that sometimes they even make the choice to wear two different shoes.

Barbara Bloom I have learned how important perfection is in the writing business. Each book I write takes a different format as I start formatting the story of a book.

Barbara Bloom When you open a book to read….the guts of the book are part of the personality of an author.

Barbara Bloom I have learned what it is like sharing yourself with the world.

Spotlight Definitely – and baring your soul takes some courage. Tell us some more about the illustrations.

Barbara Bloom I am in total control of my books. I am the author, publisher and illustrator. I use meaningful clip art for the explanations of the story. In my dreams one day all my books will be on full bleed color pages. My writings are compared in style to Dr. Seuss but as a self published author I work with what I have and today there are some great clip art programs.

Spotlight I’d like to know a little more about your other books. Can you provide us a link to your Author page on Amazon?

Barbara Bloom  Yes I would love too.

“Run Hide The Monster Is Outside” is one of my favorites. It teaches children in a fun way that things are not always as they seem.
“Here Comes Pixie Pie” is about a little girl and her favorite color is pink. She gets all dressed in her western wear to go to the rodeo fair for her birthday. This book is also written in rhyme.

“School Time Rhyme” is a fun book written with a rhyming flow.
We wake up and put shoes on our feet.  We go to bed and brush our teeth.  This story is about how time continues to tick as a clock’s hands move forward while we work through each day and moving past the month of May.
I have a new fun book release.
“Dig The Digger” Dig is a construction truck and he has plans to dig a fishing hole with his construction truck friends.  This story is written in rhyme.
